U.S. opinion about Israel drops for the first time in decades
A new Pew Research Center study found that 53% of Americans hold unfavorable views of Israel, the lowest rate in decades. In March 2022, that number was 42%. The bulk of the shift is from Americans under 49, with 71% of young Democrats and 50% of young Republicans being unfavorable, from 62% and 35% in 2022, respectively. Among American Christians, 40% of Protestants and 53% of Catholics are unfavorable. We have our work cut out for us. In the aftermath of October 7th, the primary criticism of Israel came from the left. Now, it’s also coming from the right. Neo-Marxist, neo-isolationist, and supersessionist sentiments converge on anti-Zionism, and we can’t let those forces overtake our churches, universities, and political discourse. Each member of our Philos community is on the front lines of combatting these narratives. By sharing our resources on YouTube and social media, forwarding these emails, enrolling in our online academy, and joining us for events, you’re helping spread the mission. Change starts with individuals, and through education, advocacy, and prayer, we will continue standing with Israel and the Jewish people to preserve our Judeo-Christian roots, the bulwark of Western civilization.
Trump sets a two-month deadline for Iranian nuclear agreement
President Trump and Israeli PM Netanyahu had their second face-to-face meeting this week, during which Trump made a big announcement: The U.S. and Iran will have direct talks on Saturday about a diplomatic solution to Iran’s nuclear program. The U.S. and Iran have not had diplomatic relations since 1980 after the Iran hostage deal, and the Trump admin has been breaking the status quo by opening communication with malign actors in the region to negotiate better deals. However, Iran seems to contradict these claims, saying talks will remain indirect. These negotiations are backdropped by half a dozen B-2 Spirit bombers stationed in the Indian Ocean, along with a slew of Naval vessels, in a show of U.S. military might to conduct or assist Israel in a potential strike on Iran’s nuclear sites. Among numerous complications, an attack on Iran could incite retaliatory strikes against Saudi oil, driving up prices in an already fragile market. Another concern is expending U.S. military assets that the U.S. would prefer to divert toward the Pacific. However, Iran is hellbent on attaining the bomb and may drag out negotiations. Join us as we pray for wisdom for our leaders this weekend.
